Radio Volunteers Group

So how do people get involved in Christian radio production for mainstream radio stations? Well, the answer is – it’s not easy! There are so few opportunities in the UK for radio beginners to find a place to broadcast their first productions. That’s why we started the Whistling Frog Radio Volunteers Group.

This is a group of local people from churches around West Yorkshire who gather together in our Bradford studios every Tuesday evening to make fun radio! They brainstorm ideas, write scripts, record voices, mix in music and come up with some amazing radio inserts, all with the Whistling Frog ‘ethos’ – creative, quality, entertaining and challenging. Many of the volunteers’ creations end up as Thoughts in Shorts on The Full Breakfast or as the latest additions to Audiopot .

Sandra and Nick receive their award from Prunella Scales

The Radio Volunteers Group have recently won the 2006 Jerusalem Awards top award in the 'Reflections' category for 'Exterminate! Exterminate!' This piece took the form of a spoof on the TV favourite ‘Dr Who’. In the thought, two daleks have a touchy-feely moment whilst reflecting on 1 Corinthians chapter 13! Originally produced for The Full Breakfast this thought was also syndicated to a number of other UK commercial stations via Audiopot . The same piece earlier won a Commendation in the ‘Thought for the Day’ category at the Churches Media Conference 2006. This award was presented to Whistling Frog producers Sandra Coleman and Nick Mangeolles by actress Prunella Scales CBE.

If you’d like to have a go yourself at communicating something of God’s love in bite-sized pieces to thousands of listeners over the airwaves, why not come along to the Whistling Frog Radio Volunteers Group? We meet every Tuesday evening from 7.30 till 9.30 at the HCJB Global studios in central Bradford. For more details contact us, tell us a bit about yourself and why you want to come along.Jerusalem Awards 2005
