Hydro-Electricity

In order to provide power for our shortwave transmitters and hospitals in Ecuador, we have been operating a hydroelectric power station at Papallacta, Ecuador, since 1965. In 1971 a dam on the outfall of Lake Loreto was brought into service introducing our first water storage reservoir. The original installed capacity at the Papallacta power station was 1500 kW. In 1982 a second unit rated at 4200 kW was installed with a dam on the Papallacta River to provide daily water storage.

hydroMore recently, the Loreto Project increased the capacity of the Loreto Reservoir by raising the existing dam by 3.3 metres, installed a penstock to the confluence of the Papallacta and Baños Rivers, and also installed a power house and 2050 kW Pelton turbine. Surplus power is sold to the Eucadorian national grid.
